New Seat Belts Save Challenge from NOYS
It's time for a new Seat Belts Save Challenge! The National Organizations for Youth Safety (NOYS) welcomes you to sign up. Registration for the fall 2017 Challenge opens September 1. Seat Belts Save, sponsored by The National Road Safety Foundation, educates teen drivers about the importance of buckling up and empowers them to increase seat belt use among their peers. Participating schools can win cash awards and other great prizes. Get details and register starting Friday.
REMINDER Updating MV-524 Cards
September 30th is the date many MV-524 cards will be coming due for renewal. As mentioned in previous emails, the driving schools were able to send in those renewal packets since July. If your school is still waiting on these MV-524 cards, contacting the driving school you contract with would be prudent.
If you need assistance on how to update these MV-524 card holders on the DE-1A form, the link is here:

Reminder – Program, Teacher, and Instructor Approvals
It is the policy within the DTSE Office that program approval forms (DE-1 and DE-1A) will be processed approximately four weeks from the date which they are received. Forms that have been submitted which include errors or missing materials may incur additional processing time.
**All approvals and changes must be made prior to using any new teachers/instructors. If a teacher or instructor has not been officially approved by NYSED’s DTSE Office, you must wait until such paperwork has been approved.**
Note: DTSE Guidelines Section 1, Item 1:
The New York State Education Department (NYSED) must approve all Driver and Traffic Safety Education (DTSE) courses offered by public and nonpublic secondary schools, colleges, and BOCES prior to the commencement of instruction. (See V&T law 507 item 1)
Making up Classes
With the new school year starting, many have recently asked if students could do an assignment as a “make up” for an absence. The answer is No.
Students who miss a lecture must make up lecture time. Students who miss driving time must make up the driving time. Assignments are not a suitable alternative, although assignments may be given in addition to any make-ups a student must attend.
Please note – a student may only have a maximum of 90 minutes of lecture per day. Students may only do a maximum of 90 minutes of in-car observation/driving per day. Students may not surpass those totals per day for any reason. It is important to also note that a student may NOT attend 2 lecture classes in one day or double in-car sessions per day. Please see the DTSE Guidelines for further information, but if there are any questions, please feel free to call or email to discuss.
REMINDER MV-285s and MV-285Rs (Rosters)
Please note that MV-285Rs must be sent in within 2 weeks of completion of your DTSE Course. Please also note that as of the August 2015 guidelines, Client ID numbers must be listed on the MV-285R.
